As of 1 January 2009, discrimination on grounds of gender identity or gender expression is prohibited in Sweden.
Previous anti-discrimination legislation only protected the right of transsexuals not to be subjected to discrimination. The new ground of discrimination was introduced to ensure comprehensive protection against discrimination for all transpersons, including transvestites, intersexuals and intergender and transgender persons.
Sweden is the first country in the world to have introduced a legal ban on discrimination associated with gender identity or gender expression.
